Miami Dolphins Have WR Dream Team

When thinking about a Dream Team of wide receivers the Miami Dolphins may not immediately come to mind but a closer look reveals that maybe fans should start considering this new wide receiving corps. The Dolphins went out and acquired receivers in a variety of ways this offseason, from trading for Kenny Stills to signing Greg Jennings to finally drafting Devante Parker. These moves were largely unheralded, drafting Parker was admittedly pretty heralded, however they might prove to be exactly the right mix of what the Dolphins need. Allow me to break down their roles, in a way that shows just what an interesting mix this might be.

Greg Jennings: The reliable veteran who can be the wise voice of the wide receiver room. Jennings’ role cannot be understated as without him in the fold I would suggest fans worry, due to their being no clear veteran voice. Jennings is a Superbowl champion who has played for two of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. He is definitely passed his prime but seeing what he did against the Dolphins in week 16 should give fans hope for what he can do in aqua and orange. He is also a true professional as can be seen by his team first approach to his introductory press conference. Ryan Tannehill should have no qualms about throwing to him on third and 8 which may be exactly what the Dolphins need from him.

Kenny Stills: The stretch the field guy. There is no one in the NFL who had a better deep ball catch percentage than Kenny Stills last year, at 64.3 percent. Will that number drop for him going from Drew Brees to Ryan Tannehill, yes. Will it help Tannehill’s deep ball struggles, yes. Kenny Stills is not a one trick pony as I avidly watched him last year(read: he was on my fantasy team). His presence jumpstarted the Saint’s offense, as one could clearly see the O was far better when he got back from an early season injury. He puts defense on notice that he can take the top off anytime he chooses which leaves cornerback’s susceptible to quick hitter’s and curls given that they usually play so far off of him.

Jarvis Landry: The guy who can make plays underneath from the slot/quarterback’s safety blanket. This is the only one of the four receivers that I will mention that Ryan Tannehill has actually completed an NFL pass to. This automatically puts him in the running for receptions leader on the team for the second year in a row. His position in the slot does nothing to dissuade me from making this statement. He has strong hands, can get yards after the catch and going into his second year should only be better than last year. If Dolphins fans can get Jarvis Landry to be even a little bit better than he was last year then they will be in for a treat. Also, watch out for him to have a big game against the Giants as he and Odell Beckham will undoubtedly be pumped to compete against each other statistically.

Devante Parker: The redzone guy/number 1 guy/ future guy. Devante Parker will be should be called upon to do quite a lot in this offense in his first year. So far word from camp suggests that he is more than up to the task. He made some incredible catches during rookie camp and really impressed those in attendance. His film from college is incredible and shows his ability to be the swiss army knife the Miami Dolphins need him to be. He has incredible hands, having dropped 3 passes in his four-year college career. You read that right, 3. That drop rate is literally less than one per year. Incredible. He is also fast, tall and can jump. There is a very good reason that he was Mel Kiper’s favorite pick of the first round.

This Dolphins receiving corps has everything covered with Devante Parker being a true number 1(hopefully), Jarvis Landry being the ultimate slot guy, Greg Jennings being the possession receiver/wise older veteran and Kenny Stills being the deep threat. This is going to be a fun year for Ryan Tannehill and hopefully for Miami Dolphins fans.
