Miami Dolphins release Coples and McCain

The Miami Dolphins have officially started making roster moves to get under the salary cap and they did just than on Friday releasing two players.

Quinton Coples who was signed towards the end of the season was guaranteed a $7.5 million contract in 2016 if he was on the opening day roster. His contract was not guaranteed beyond that league stipulation and now the Dolphins reduced their cap by the full $7.5 million.
Coples didn’t play great but he didn’t play bad during his stay with the Dolphins and Miami may look to add him as depth at much reduced rate.
While no one being released at this point is truly surprising, the Dolphins opted to release corner back Brice McCain. McCain joined the Dolphins last off-season and while he played poorly on the edge he did much better as the nickel slot corner for the team. It didn’t really matter as the Dolphins secondary as a whole was not very good last year.
McCain did however have the early season highlight when he intercepted a Kirk Cousins pass in week one with a one handed over the shoulder pick.
The release of McCain saves the Dolphins about $2.5 million in cap space. The Dolphins will have to eat $1 million in dead money on the season.
Miami made a few other moves as well on Friday adding Daronte Jones as an assistant defensive backs coach that will work with Lou Anarumo. In addition they shook up the front office a little bit letting Erik Stokes go. Stokes has served as the assistant general manager the last two seasons and was brought to Miami by former GM Dennis Hickey. The move was not unexpected.
The Dolphins will still be making changes on the player side of things in the next couple of weeks as they try and sign their own impending free agents and work towards freeing up some cap space to work in free agency.
