1 (13) (from Philadelphia) Laremy Tunsil, OT, Ole Miss – If one of the other top tackles had fallen it would have been a consideration. When the top one falls it becomes a no-brainer. It helps the guard situation and depth now as well as a tackle spot later. A+

2 (38) Xavien Howard, CB, Baylor – They knew who they wanted and went and got him. Also helps fills the scheme of new DC Vance Joseph prototypical corner being big and tall although reach is not exactly optimal. B+

3 (73) Kenyan Drake, RB, Alabama – Also a case of preference and fit with HC Adam Case wanting an all-purpose back to fit his scheme. He is said to have a tendency to want to bounce outside the same trait Ajayi already has which could be a hindrance when trying to pick up short yardage first downs. C+

3 (86) Leonte Carroo, WR, Rutgers – While Drake probably could have been drafted later Carroo had fallen so it’s a wash. Dolphins had wanted to hang onto Rishard Matthews who had the best YAC last season a trait Carroo has along with similar size and stature. B

6 (186) (from Miami via Minnesota) Jakeem Grant, WR, Texas Tech – Intriguing choice he is small in stature but that’s where it ends he is a tough competitor who is lightning fast. He is destined for returns or possibly some designed plays to get him in space. C+

6 (204) Jordan Lucas, S, Penn State – Just to find the Vance Joseph prototype this late in the draft is a positive. However he has even less of the optimum reach as Howard. Although he does have larger hands and somewhat good speed 40-yard dash: 4.45 seconds to Howard’s 4.41 seconds, maybe he can get coached up. B

7 (223) Brandon Doughty, QB, Western Kentucky – There was talk of adding a QB and they got an accurate passer who is tough in the pocket. He is also a local product (Davie) and a life long avid Dolphins fan. C

7 (231) Thomas Duarte, WR, UCLA – Adam Gase is said to like TE’s in his scheme. Back when it looked like Jordan Cameron was on his way out Gase stepped in, with comparisons to Jordan Reed Gase also stepped in and might have something cooking. C

The grading also accounts for this being the first draft of this new GM/HC/DC. And as such some leeway should be granted to fit their own visions of a scheme to set in place. As well as being new to swinging trades. With all this in mind. Why make things harder than they have to be?
