Predicting the Dolphins 53: Secondary

The Miami Dolphins are hoping that the combination of athleticism and talent will outweight some of the teams inexperience in their secondary.

In this final pre-training camp prediction of the Dolphins final 53 we wrap with the secondary. The Dolphins have one of the best safeties in the NFL and one of the most inexperienced cornerback units in the NFL.

Dolphins defensive coordinator Vance Joseph was able to do a lot with the players he had while with the Bengals making them one of the better physical units in the league so it’s likely Joseph spends some time with his new secondary.

Unfortunately the talent in Miami is not as good as it was in Cincinnati. At least not yet.

The Dolphins have 9 corners on their roster as of this posting and it’s possible that some changes may occur through training camp. Of those nine, Bobby McCain who played well down the stretch, Byron Maxwell who the Dolphins traded for, Tony Lippett, and Xavien Howard are all locks at corner.

Chimdi Chekwa a four year veteran also looks to make the team as well. With five members of the unit pretty clear, the remaining spot will likely go to rookie Jordan Lucas or Ifo Ekpre-Olomu. The two should have a pretty decent battle throughout camp.

At safety, Reshad Jones is the no-brainer and free agent safety Isa Abdul-Quddus will make up the starting duo. Returning safeties Michael Thomas and Walt Aikens are hoping to take a step forward after not progressing in 2015. This could be the last season for both of them without a jump in production.

Shamiel Gary and A.J. Hendy are outside looking in with Gary potentially stealing a spot from either Aikens or Thomas.
