Round 2 of the Geno Smith experiment didn’t last long, tearing his ACL in week seven.  Which New York Jets quarterback will Miami face in week 9?

More from Phin Phanatic

The Jets face the Cleveland Browns this next week.  We could have an answer by next Monday.

For now, however, all signs point to Ryan Fitzpatrick quarterbacking the rest of the season.  But we all know how quickly that can change.

Fitzpatrick has struggled this season, completing just over 57% of his passes, throwing just six touchdowns to 11 interceptions.  And after stepping in for an injured Smith yesterday, Fitzpatrick brought a swagger we’ve seen him have before leading the Jets to a 24-16 win over the Baltimore Ravens.

If Fitzpatrick is the guy for week nine then Miami could have their work cut out for themselves.  Late last season Fitzpatrick threw for for four touchdowns en route to a 38-10 Dolphins feast.  He also led New York to a 27-14 win earlier in 2015 and holds a 5-3 all-time record against Miami.

It’s also possible that the former Harvard graduate has ultimately played himself out of a job in New York.  The Jets front office was hesitant in bringing Fitzpatrick back for 2016 and after the game yesterday he called the entire Jets front office under the bus.

Quote(s) provided by Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News:

"“The biggest thing in this game in order to last, is to have belief in yourself,” Fitzpatrick said. “Because when the owner stops believing in you and the GM stops believing in you and the coaches stop believing in you, sometimes all you have is yourself. That’s something that I’ve had to deal with before. That’s something I’m dealing with now.”"

We can’t blame New York for benching Fitzpatrick after he threw nine interceptions over the course of week three and four.  However, we’ve seen this kind of trick from “Fitzmagic” over the tenure of his nine-year career where he’s doubted and comes back and puts on a show.

And he knows it.

"“I probably play better as an underdog pissed off,” Fitzpatrick said. “So going forward, yeah, I’ll be pissed off.”"

Now with Smith out and Fitzpatrick one chomp away from chewing himself out of The Big Apple, who’s next?

The final two Jets quarterbacks on the roster are Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg, the latter currently on the practice squad.  Petty will be vying for snaps at practice this week and Hackenberg will likely get the call up to the active roster.

Assuming that Petty or Hackenberg gets action in at some point this season isn’t far off.  Smith is set to become a free agent this next offseason and there’s no chance Fitzpatrick returns in 2017.  Bowles and company need to see what their future looks like under center.

Keep an eye this week with which direction head coach Todd Bowles takes moving forward.
