Nobody really has high expectations for a player that is drafted in the 7th round. When the Miami Dolphins drafted Rishard Matthews from Nevada with the 227th pick in the 7th round last year, most fans had no clue who he was. Competing with 11 other receivers in training camp, he beat the odds and earned a spot on the Dolphins’ 53 man roster. Without further ado, let’s grade out Matthews on his overall performance in 2012.

Dec 2, 2012; Miami, FL, USA; Miami Dolphins wide receiver Rishard Matthews (86) makes a catch in front of New England Patriots cornerback Alfonzo Dennard (37) during the second half at Sun Life Stadium.
To begin with, Matthews was slowly acclimated to the Dolphins’ offense. He only played in eight games. During the last three games, QB Ryan Tannehill started targeting him more, often going his way in critical third down situations. Overall, he was targeted 19 times, catching 11 balls for 151 yards and zero touchdowns. Trust me; I do realize these numbers aren’t exactly Pro Bowl worthy.

Wide Receiver Armon Binns was undrafted out of the University of Cincinnati in 2011. Starting off this season with the Cincinnati Bengals playing in eight games, he was able to contribute with 17 receptions for 210 yards and one touchdown. However, as the season grew on he began to slip down the depth chart and started showing up on the inactive list on a weekly basis. Since he was becoming non-existent in the offense, the Bengals eventually released him and the Miami Dolphins were there to pick him up off waivers on December 10th, 2012.

Dec 30, 2012; Foxborough, MA, USA; Miami Dolphins wide receiver Armon Binns (19) drops a pass against the New England Patriots during the first half at Gillette Stadium.
Because of his limited time playing with the Dolphins, it’s difficult to pin an accurate grade on him. In those three games, he only caught 6 passes for 67 yards and zero touchdowns. That’s hardly worth writing home about. The fact that he didn’t have any eye-opening or game-changing plays also make it hard for me to say this kid can be a potential “playmaker.” (more…)

The weakest link on the 2012 Miami Dolphins’ Squad was at the wide receiver position. When the Dolphins traded away WR Brandon Marshall in the offseason and failed to find a replacement, the door was left wide open for some of the other receivers to step up. Unfortunately for Marlon Moore, he was unable to capitalize on this opportunity. And after three mediocre seasons, 2012 will most likely be Moore’s last stint as a Dolphin.

Nov.11, 2012; Miami, FL, USA; Miami Dolphins wide receiver Marlon Moore (14) during the first half against the Tennessee Titans at Sun Life Stadium.
Moore is simply non-existent in this offense. Even though he received ample playing time this season participating in 14 games, he was only able to record just six catches for 116 yards and one measly touchdown. During his three years with Miami, he only has 12 catches for 244 yards and two touchdowns. (more…)
