Dolphins should go after Corey Dillon

facebooktwitterreddit

The Miami Dolphins are not deep with experience at the RB position. Corey Dillon is no longer receiving a paycheck from the New England Patriots. Miami should look at their roster and then sign Dillon.

Dillon is old and had contemplated retirement the last two years, yet he could be a nice security blanket should current starter Ronnie Brown go down with injury. The depth at the RB spot has to be somewhat of a concern given the fact that Brown tends to miss time do to injuries.

With Dillon spelling Brown from time to time, Brown would get some rest that at times he needs. Rookie Lorenzo Booker will get valuable understudy time from a guy who could someday be in the Hall of Fame. Maybe.

Cam Cameron is another one who would benefit from the appearence of Dillon. In the Cameron system that was used in SD, the RB saw a lot of carries and Dillon would provide a change of pace back who has the ability, still, to make yardage. If Cameron wants to surround himself with character people, Dillon has come a long way from the self-centered problem child he was with the Bengals.

In addition to the fact that he is a proven veteran, he would bring intangibles that the Fins are lacking. Sure we signed Trent Green to fill the void of QB leadership, but what about winning mentality? Dillon has played in 2 Super Bowls. He is used to being around an organization that not only knows how to win, but how to co-exist with differing personalities. Dillon would add a confidence that has been lacking for over a decade.

Still want more? How about the best one of all. He played for New England. Miami has sent 3 players up to the northern United States to play for them. Having just a little insight to how the team operates could be difference in a close game. Dillon would have that knowledge. He knows the game prep, what everyone watches on film, what they try and expose and the rest of the preparation habits of Billychuck.

Dillon is not a long term solution, but he is not supposed to be. Much the same way Miami brought in Thurman Thomas for one year, Dillon gives Miami much needed depth from a guy who is used to winning. This offense needs a serious shot of both.

While writing this blog entry, I ran across a blurb from Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald that said Dillon has an interest in playing for the Dolphins. Whether or not this is media speculation, wild fantasy, or completely true, the Dolphins should take the time, pick up the phone, and call Corey Dillon. Maybe something doesn’t fit and nothing gets done, maybe the two sides can not come to a financial agreement. Maybe they sign him by the start of training camp. The should do something. Our RB situation is far from horrid, it really is not even poor. It just lacks a flavor. The taste of victory. That starts with mindset and Corey Dillon has it and Miami needs it. Sounds like a perfect match to me.
