Dolphins fans show a lot of class…lessness!
By Brian Miller
The Miami Dolphins opened the pre-season last night to a chorus of Trent Green boos’ as he exited the field in the first half. Green put up poor numbers without a doubt. A fumble, an interception, an incomplete pass at the goal, 6 of 15 for 60 yards is anything but what you want to see. Still, many Dolphins fans showed nothing but class…lessness.
There were reasons to boo this performance, if this performance was against Washington in 4 weeks. Or against Dallas in 5, or any of the other teams we play between September and December. But pre-season game 1? Seriously? Classless.
It is pretty bad that the Dolphins go out and actually win the first game of Cam Camerons’ pro coaching career and at least one local news paper last night put up an article titled “Green draws boo’s in sloppy debut“, instead of Dolphins win. Classless.
The Dolphins have become a “not very good” team over the last 4 years. They have one of the best defenses in the league yet the offense has struggled at times to the point of non-existence. There are fans and media alike who need to take a step off the pedestal and realize that this team is undergoing some changes. Changes in the offensive philosophy, changes in the Head Coach, changes in the coaching staff, changes at QB, changes on the offensive line. Changes. All those changes create problems. There is no way that the Dolphins should look like they are ready for the season. They should look lost and confused at times. There are 2 rookies starting on the oline, the same fans that have griped for years about the fact that we get no production from our draft picks, need to realize that at this level, just being able to start does not make you an all-pro. Ask last year top tackle D’Brikashaw Ferguson. Sure he did well as the season wore on, but his pre-season wasn’t pretty. G0 ask top lineman Robert Gallery what playing in the NFL is like. Satele and Mormino were drafted in the 2nd and the 6th. I think they are doing quite well considering. They should be able to progressively get better. If not, then feel free to boo.
Trent Green is in a similar system, but like it or not, it is not the same system. There is terminology to learn, there is timing, there is audibles. Green needs to be on the same page with his receivers, he needs to be on the same page with his new TE’s who also are new to the team.
Last night, we heard the boo-birds. A ridiculously absurd joke. This was nothing more than a swipe at this administration for going out and getting Trent Green. Get over it. He is the QB whether you like it or not. Trent Green very well may end up being a mistake. There are a lot of odds against him being successful in Miami, judge the situation come the end of September, October, or for that matter next year at this time. Game 1 of pre-season? Sorry, your wrong.
Take a ride along the information super highway and stop by some Dolphins forums, read some of the “Lemon should start” threads. These are the same fans that look for nothing more than an excuse to thump their chests and say “I was right.” See there are many many fans out there that feel the same way, but they tend to realize that PS game 1 is not indicative of what the team will look like in game 3 or 4. Or for that matter RS game 1.
It is not just Green either that is the water cooler talk today. Ronnie Brown is facing the “posting” wrath of fans who now believe that a combination of Patrick Cobbs and Jesse Chatman are all this team needs. Average is what some are calling Brown now. Again, nothing more than fans who can’t watch a football game and dissect what is actually happening on the field. That is not to say that there is no blame, there is, it is just being misplaced and the blame game shouldn’t be starting for another couple weeks at the earliest.
I have never booed at a live Miami Dolphins game, not at the players and team anyways. There were many times that it was warranted, especially under DW. There are many fans that do not boo. It does not make me or them any more of a fan than those that do, so I will not say that a fan who boos is not a “real fan”, it does not mean that we love the Dolphins more or less than those that do either. If a fan wants to boo the team or a player, that his or her business, but at least do it when there is some meaning behind the game, do it when “expecting more” actually makes sense. Doing it in the first half of the first pre-season game, in the first game of our new HC, in the first set of series for the new QB, that isn’t “expecting more” that is just plain ignorant. If this were the Jets, it would be understandable, if this were the Bills, that would be too. This is Miami, your supposed to be smarter than that, your supposed to be intelligent…next time, try and show a little more class.
