4 or 5? Spragan on the outs? Chambers in or out?
By Brian Miller
The Miami Dolphins have a problem, well, they have not been in the playoffs for 5 years, so they have more than just one problem. Still, according to the Miami Herald, the Dolphins may only keep 4 WRs’. So the question is, will it be 4 or will it be 5? On Saturday, all teams will need to be at the 53 man roster so in two days time, we will know what that answer is. Will Donnie Spragan find himself unemployed after the signing of Cordova? What is going on with the Chris Chambers rumors?
Should the Dolphins go with 4 wide-outs, it will become even more intriguing in terms of where they classify Ted Ginn. Will he be listed as a WR or on STs’? With Ginn as a WR, the roster would look like Chambers, Booker, Hagan, and Ginn. Without Ginn, it may look like Chambers, Booker, Hagan, and ??? who knows. Kerry Reed is battling with PK Sam, and both of them are battling with Az-Zahir Hakim, who in turn is battling with time.
There are currently 9 WR listed on the Dolphins roster. Chambers, Booker, Hagan, Reed, Hakim, Sam, Malone, Allen, and Ginn. So that could mean up to 5 of these guys gone.
What was at one time assumed to be a position of depth, now seems to be rather weak. Only Sam and Reed have made a real impression this pre-season, but is it enough to warrant a roster spot after showcasing against 3rd team units? Maybe not.
Should the Fins keep 4, it would surely allow them to keep most of their RBs’ if they choose. Mauia, Schlesinger, Brown, Booker, Chatman, Cobbs, and Eckel. Eckel is a pretty safe bet for the cut list, and Cobbs is likely headed to the PS. Still there are 2 FBs’ and 3 RBs’ that the Fins want to keep. The space on the roster has to come from somewhere. WR’s just might be the place to find it.
In other news, the Dolphins recently signed Jorge Cordova who will actually see some game time tonight against NO. The question surrounding Cordova is where does he fit in? He is a DE/LB but will not be taking away time from the likes of Roth. It might be interesting to watch and see how he performs. Seems odd to sign him only to cut him right away. The man I think may be on the losing end if Cordova sticks, could be Donnie Spragan. As you may recall, Spragan was not resigned prior to the start of free agency this year and was resigned later when the field of available players dried up. He could be the player to lose out here. It will be worth watching.
Explaining the unexplainable:
There has been so much talk on the trade rumors of Chris Chambers lately that it really isn’t worth blogging it. Forums and blogs alike have run with what Adam Schefter called a “on the block” player in a report earlier in the week. It became so heated, the rumor that is, that on Dolphins All-Access radio yesterday with Randy Mueller, Mueller addressed the rumor by saying “Chris will be in a Dolphins jersey for years to come”.
Now the way I see it, is he has to say that. This is similar to “I will not be coaching in Alabama.” Mueller can not say, “yes I want to trade our number 1 WR” or “If he does not perform this year he is gone”. That does nothing for CC, the locker-room, or the team itself.
Mueller referenced that sometimes GMs’ talk. And sometimes talk of a specific player will come up. That is what happened here. It is a matter of mention. Only someone heard the name mentioned and called Scheft.
The truth is that Miami really can’t let Chambers go right now, there is no one else to step up and do it. Not that CC is is consistent or anything. If a team offered up a future 1st rounder, and maybe more, then yes I think that Mueller would take that. Otherwise, CC will be on this team. As the trade deadline approaches, his name might resurface, especially if Miami is contention for a top 5 draft pick instead of a top 5 playoff seed. Then, maybe. Chambers is facing a salary of anywhere between 5 and 7 million next year and unless his game play changes for the better, regardless of what Mueller says, Chambers very well may be wearing a different jersey next year.
