Well, at least this game is over.

It is really quite hard to put into words exactly what was displayed on the field today.  A game that started with a promising defensive front, fast paced, energetic, fire in their eyes, and that was on the first series.  It pretty much went downhill after that.

The Miami Dolphins for the 2nd week in a row failed to put any pressure on the opposing QB.  Failed so miserably in fact that at times, that at times you would think they were running 3 man front or a two man rush while adding secondary help….they weren’t.  The Dallas Cowboys were able to move the ball whenever they wanted to.  When the Dolphins defense stepped up and stopped them on 1st and 2nd downs, they stared the Cowboys offense in the eye and said…”Just kidding, there you go” and gave up a long first down.

It was the Cowboys who for 3 quarters found a way to screw themselves up, just long enough to allow Dolphins fans the hope that the game could be pulled out for a win.  Then, the 4th quarter came around and the Dolphins defenders looked like they needed to go back to training camp and get some reps, and more conditioning.  They were that bad.

The defense was so bad that today the offense could look good.  But of course that wouldn’t happen.  Trent Green botched a clock stopping spike on first down, had to line the team up and do it again on 2nd down.  He threw 4 interceptions which could have easily have been 6.  He botched a center/QB exchange which gave the ball back to the Cowboys.  At one point the Boys started in Dolphins territory 3 consecutive series.

There were moments of clarity as the Dolphins WR’s found holes in the suspect secondary of the Cowboys, but Trent overthrew them.  Last week Trent looked solid, he looked like a leader and it was the WR issues that led to a poor offensive day.  In this game, the WR’s did not drop many balls, mainly because they were never really close enough to get them.  Chambers played better than he has in quite awhile, but he still had a few bone-headed plays, an offsides looking in at the center.  Two instances of bad patterns that both led to INTs’, however, the passes from Green were not that good anyways and Chambers would not have likely made either catch.

Then of course there is the running game, I mean there should be a running game.  It was non-existent and the fact that there was no running game can be attributed to the offensive line and the play calling of Cam Cameron who is starting to show that he is in way over his head pulling both duties as HC/OC.

Starting off the second half, the Dolphins ran the ball right at the Cowboys defense.  Ronnie Brown was gaining solid yards and the drive ended with a TD.  To reward Brown for all of his hard work, Cameron sat him down until late in the 4th quarter rather than allow the back to pick up momentum.  The Dolphins would not reach then end-zone again until an ill-advised pass from Green was knocked around in the end-zone and landed in Derrick Hagans’ hands.

Individual efforts were really nowhere to be seen.  Jason Taylor, the leader of this team has been nonexistent in the first two weeks and high profile FA was seen ripping the helmet off of Dallas RB Marion Barber….he got a beautiful 15 yard reward for his effort.

Samson Satele will go through a lot of growing pains before he develops into the Center that both fans and the Dolphins hope him to be, today he was outmatched.  Worse than Satele however was the play of LT Vernon Carey who apparently forgot how to block on several plays.  This offensive line has almost reached a new low.  Yes there are some younger guys on this unit and in VCs’ case he is playing a new position, but there are no more excuses, this line is playing “bush league”.

If you think that the offensive line is bad, if you think that the play of the defense is bad, hell, if you think that the play of the entire offense is bad, then imagine the special teams being worse, because it is.

Jay Feely aside, there is no one on the special teams that is playing very special, oh wait, I forgot about the teams soon to be 2007/08 MVP…Brandon Fields.  The coverage unit gave up two very huge plays on returns today, one that almost went the distance and the other that went to the 10 yard line and was called back by a penalty.  Jason Allen and the punting team pinned the cowboys back at their 15 yard line at a crucial part of the game.  Allen makes a stupid penalty, Fields re-kicks, and Patrick Crayton returns the ball into Miami territory.

Then, there is Ted Ginn.  This is a guy that should be on the practice squad.  His motions are hesitant and he runs scared.  This is a guy who looks terrified to take a hit.  On one punt, instead of breaking to the deep side of the field, he took to the sidelines, on another he ran 5 steps, stopped and tucked his body into a ball and fell into the hit, still on another, he hopped around and then made for the sidelines.  Ginn has a few years before he is considered a bust, that will not stop fans from saying that he is now.

All in all, this game was a disaster on both sides of the ball and on special teams.  Cam Cameron who is supposed to be an offensive genius looks like he is coaching back at Indiana and in the process, is making his opponents look like USC.

This team has a long way to go before anyone really starts to cheer, and there are a lot of reasons for it’s demise.  Evolution takes a long time they say, and this team has evolved from a perennial contender in 1996 to what it is today.

Next week, the Dolphins play the NY Jets.  For now, well, at least this game is over!
