Around the AFC East
By Brian Miller
The Miami Dolphins sit at the bottom of the AFC East with the Buffalo Bills. The Jets one game above the two of them, and the NE Patriots walking away with yet another Eastern division title. And I do mean walk.
The Bills – Buffalo is playing is playing worse than the Dolphins are right now, if that is possible. There was much hype surrounding this team as last year, they showed tons of promise and many felt the franchise finally had turned the corner to regain some of its lore. Instead, the Bills have been decimated by injuries and yesterday saw both the TE and the QB, JP Losman, go down. The Bills have been beaten by 3-0 Pittsburgh, 2-1 Denver, and 3-0 New England. They have scored no more than 14 points, in the opener against Denver, 3 against the Steelers, and 7 in yesterdays New England loss.
The Bills are no longer that team that has turned the corner, the corner turned them. Injuries will be the story all year as this team tries to salvage any portion of their season. Perhaps the Bills have turned that corner, unfortunately it will take another season for that to be realized.
The NY Jets – The Jets started Sunday morning sitting at 0-2. They had been beaten up pretty badly in their first two games. Losses to New England who is 3-0 and 3-0 Baltimore. They faced in those two games, two of the top defenses in the league. Yesterday they faced a defense that ranks closer to the bottom. The Jets did not look very good for most of the day, but managed to take advantage of poor defensive play by Miami and it was two touchdowns in the first half that lifted the team to their first win. A 98 yard kick-off return by the back-up RB and back-up kick returner Leon Washington, and a 1 minute 37 second drive for a touch down to end the first half.
The Jets have some holes and defense that are not likely to be shored up any time soon. They will stay competitive with the weaker teams, but those teams whose defenses can stand up will give them fits. Playoffs will be a hard thing to come by for the not so Mangenius. The team just is not that good.
New England – The Patriots, all cheating aside, are the favorites to win the division…in a walk and are becoming the favorites to win the Super Bowl. The Randy Moss experiment has become the Brady/Moss show in the first 3 weeks as the two have basically been unstoppable. The Patriots have not had one game this year. In fact, the Patriots have scored 38 points in week 1, 38 points in week 2, and 38 points in week 3. No word on if that is an imposed limit by the NFL as additional punishment. Their opponents have scored 14, 14, and 7…you would have thought they could have at least shown some pity in Buffalo and let them score one more touchdown.
The NFLs’ official standing has Miami listed last in the division due to 89 points given up and the fact that both Buffalo and Miami have each lost to a division opponent. Miami has the 8th toughest schedule in the NFL, and with the play thus far of Washington, Dallas, Houston, and New England, that could go higher. There are problems in Miami, but this division is far from being what it once was…from 2nd to top, to bottom.
