Blood Pressures High Around Phins Offices
By Brian Miller
It hasn’t happened yet, the sale of the Miami Dolphins to new owner Stephen Ross, but it will soon. Ross already owns a non-controlling 50 percent of the team and is expected to sign the papers that will buy up 45% of the remaining 50. Around the Dolphins complex, blood pressures must be starting to rise and the new boss will likely start pulling in his own team of executives.
By now, fans already are wondering about the fate of Bill Parcells despite the fact that he has told LB Joey Porter that he will be back, told Wayne Huizenga he will be back, and told Ross he “intends” on being back, the truth is only BP knows what BP is going to do, and a major shake-up in the organization could be the final straw that has BP exercising his contract and walks.
At the core of the matter for now is the name Carl Peterson the former KC President and GM who was with the team since 1989. Peterson has a good relationship with Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland whom he gave his first NFL job to as a scout way back when. Peterson has publicly stated how proud he is of the Phins GM…a good sing that things should continue to improve.
The bigger question though is should Peterson join Miami, and Peterson has basically deflected all of that talk…as well he should, who then gets the ax? Popular opinion leans towards Dolphins team President Bryan Wiedmeier who has been serving the Dolphins for 20 plus years and Dolphins Enterprises CEO Joe Bailey. Bailey is expected to be gone regardless of whether Peterson joins the team or now.
Ross has been negotiating with close friend and United States Tennis Association CEO Arlen Kantarian about filling another top executive spot presumably the one currently held by Bailey. It’s not uncommon for a new owner to fill a team with his own executives and a year ago very few people would be condemning the rumored changes. With Bill Parcells and company in the house and the success of the 2008 team, changes are not warranted nor wanted by fans and players alike.
Bill Parcells is now working on signing the free agents he has left on his team…for as long as it remains his team. He contacted Wayne Huizenga and not Stephen Ross about the guys he wants to keep to which Mr. H. told him to do do whatever he needed to do. Not the kind of talk you would expect from a man who is days away from handing over the team.
The Phins have contacted the agents for Vernon Carey, Andre’ Goodman, Renaldo Hill, Yeremiah Bell, and Channing Crowder in the hopes that deals can be signed before free agency begins in 45 days. While many fans will start the countdown to FA now, the real countdown will begin very soon.
Once the papers are signed and Ross owns the team, Bill Parcells will have 30 days to pull out of his contract and walk away with 9 million dollars leaving the door open for whoever Stephen Ross wants in there. 30 days. And you thought this off-season wouldn’t have any drama.
