Moss and Marshall, on the same team? Is it worth it?

Now that Randy Moss may be put on waivers, and the Miami Dolphins have expressed interest, is it possible for Randy Moss and Brandon Marshall be on the same team? The possibility is there, if we put a claim in for him, and he falls to us, or we try to trade for him before the release. In either case, the chance is there, but slim. Lets break down the numbers of both these receivers and the other Dolphins receivers, just to see if it could be a help or a hindrance.

In Randy Moss’s career he has racked up 948 receptions for 14,778 yards and 153 touch downs in 194 games, not bad by any stretch of the imagination!! In Brandon Marshall’s career he has 374 receptions for 4607 yards and 26 TDs in 68 games. Davon Bess has 169 receptions for 1,713 yards and 6 TDs in 39 games. Brian Hartline has 56 receptions for 793 yards and 4 TDs in 23 games. Now you maybe asking yourself, What does all this mean for the Dolphins? If we break it down on an average per year, it comes out like this:

  • Moss 4.89 receptions per game, 76.18 yards per game and .78 TDs per game.
  • Marshall 5.5 receptions per game, 67.75 yards per game and .38 TDs per game.
  • Bess 4.33 receptions per game, 43.92 yards per game and .15 TDs per game.
  • Hartline 2.43 receptions per game, 34.48 yards per game and .17 TDs per game.

Giving the fact that Moss and Marshall on the field with Bess in the slot, that would let the running game run wild (and yes the Wild Cat too!) and defenses would really need to consider who they want to double, Moss or Marshall. Now with Randy’s age, most teams would generally go with a double on Marshall. But we all know that Moss is still a threat to any defense no matter what age. Taking that into account, Moss would be a great benefit for the Phins!

Now lets look at the other side of the coin. Moss has been known as a cancer to some locker rooms. Distractions only on the field not off!! Media requests have never been his strong point and he hasn’t got any better at it. Refusing to talk to the media with a $25,000 fine only two weeks ago. This week, criticizing his coach, and the play calling. He tends to take plays off at times and may not run his routes as hard as he should. He has also been accused of not giving his all to catch a ball throw his way. Can we as Phins fans tolerate this? Marshall has already been ridiculed for taking plays off this year. Although if you have two deep threats on the same team, you could rest one while the other is running deep!

We need to take into consideration the game plan and the fact that we proclaim ourselves as a running team. Chad Henne has the arm to go deep with BIG PLAY ability at anytime in a game! So this could be a match made in heaven, but it also has the potential to go south in a hurry. It would open up the ground game and give Bess a chance to catch well over a hundred balls this year!! Brian Hartline could also benefit from Moss and Marshall being on the field at the same time. These are all things that need to be thought about before this deal is done. The last thing we need to consider is would Moss even want to be in south Florida? With all the talk and hand shaking after the game on Sunday, I think he really only wants to be back in New England. Only time will tell the tale today as we watch the wire through out the day. All in all I think it maybe worth it.
