Why American Football?
I came into American Football probably through chance but more likely a gentle persuasion from our current Chairman – Glenn Herring. Glenn and I have been friends for over two years and that’s how I was introduced to the sport. He knew I liked hurting people and that I had an aggressive side that would sit well for the sport. This was basically a hobby for me to pass the time at the start but it developed to much more the more I played.
What you enjoy most about playing?
I enjoy the physical demanding aspect of the game that pushes someone who isn’t the fittest player in the team, I remember the morning after rookie day last year I couldn’t even walk to lectures but once I got there it’s all I talked about. I enjoy the battle and the modern day combat warfare that is involved in our “trenches”. I love the contact and the enjoyment having nailed a linebacker to allow the running back that extra 5 yards. Possibly for me however what I most enjoy is the leadership associated with it and leading a group of men into battle against the opposition like William Wallace/Mel Gibson minus the Scottish war paint. Leading your team as you battle others similar in age/size and strength it is the TEAM that will come out on top.
What you get from it?
The best thing from playing football and all sports is the bond you make with your “brothers”, I know on the field that the tackle will have my back if I am getting double teamed on the field, and that the same player would have my back if I got in a fight in club…but best of all I know the player will be there if I need him no matter what the situation. This bond is something that can’t be established by sitting in a lecture theatre!
The NFL lockout and how it affects you being English?
The actual reasons etc for the lockout are a bit beyond me and are not presented well in UK media and so that’s a little annoying. Other than that I just hope its sorted out soon!
