Consider me not impressed. O.k. so it’s really only two weeks but honestly, two weeks is a long time to wait for many consider more entertaining than the regular season of the NFL…after your favorite team has been knocked out anyways. I love the NFL Draft. I love the excitement the not-knowing, and the surprises. Who could have seen the Dion Jordan move by the Miami Dolphins this year? Seriously! I even love watching the green room to see who drops and then pouts and then acts like a child and says “I’m not coming tomorrow”. Ahem…Geno Smith.
Next year the NFL Draft will have to wait. Moving from the late April start to two week later into May, the NFL officially made it official when they added the dates to their Facebook page. The leagues new year will begin two days earlier on March 11th but the wait now for the draft will seem a lot longer. There are only so many “mock drafts” you can read, so many player analysis and highlight reels to watch. Enough already give me the selections dammit!.
The real downer in all of this belongs to the teams themselves. The NFL wants them to believe it gives them an extra two weeks of prep and research but it shortens the dates of camp agendas. The rookie class normally will report the weekend the draft will actually take place next year. Then comes the OTA periods. It’s a little much crammed into a shorter date field. But that is the NFL. The league is trying to capitalize on it’s popularity but this move doesn’t exactly put the draft into the middle of the May sweeps although I could be wrong as the networks themselves seem hell bent on screwing up my memory with all their changes from year to year.
The reality is I’m selfish and I want the draft moved up not back. It’s fun and it’s football when there is no football. I know, there is no football in May to speak of either and now there will be a draft. A draft that will now cost me another 40 bucks for the month of May to run Finsradio.net. I swear BlogtalkRadio.com is behind this. I kid of course. Regardless of my feelings or the feelings of the NFL teams that it really effects, the NFL draft will venture into the early weeks of May. May 8th to 10th to be exact. So grab a pen, marker, or crayon, and reschedule those after draft trips or reschedule your booked hotel room in NYC the end of next April.
