The Miami Dolphins will pare down their roster to the final 53 today. The cuts must be made by 6:00 this afternoon. It’s likely the Dolphins will spend all day waiting to see what other teams do before making a final decision…or not. Already, according to Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald, the Miami Dolphins have released RB Jonas Gray.
Gray missed his 2012 rookie season with an injury but looked ready to take a strong role as a back-up after a strong pre-season start. While he showed flashes of being NFL ready, there were often times that he simply couldn’t hit the pocket and seemed to fade when compared to this years rookie runner, Mike Gillislee. In addition to Gray, the Dolphins have also parted ways with Chris Barker and Sam Brenner two of their offensive lineman.
The Dolphins are now sitting around 72 players on the roster and will need to eliminate 19 more.
In other news the Dolphins worked out a few street free agents but have not made any offers. As it relates to the tight-end position, a position most fans are interested in seeing unfold with today’s cuts around the league, a Miami Herald report is saying that the Phins are content with the TE’s they have on the roster today. As is traditional Herald protocol, they also quickly point out that while the team may “stand pat” at the position, they will also be looking at the waiver wire and making phone calls to “upgrade” the position. If you are shaking your head wondering what the hell that means…Yeah…me too. Shame on you Mr. Beasley…taking a page from Armando. Here’s the link.
Today’s cuts will have many fans talking but focus will be on a few key areas. Will the team keep all three of their QB’s? Pat Devlin hasn’t looked fantastic this pre-season but he is still showing improvement. With the release of Jonas Gray how will this impact the WR’s? With Chad Bumphis, Rishard Mathews, Marvin McNutt, and Brian Tyms all trying to make one or two positions on the team will the lack of an extra runner allow the team to keep another WR?
We will find out later today for sure. The regular season kicks off in eight days!
