Miami Dolphins Average 8 Spot Power Rank Jump

The Miami Dolphins turned some heads this past weekend and will enter NFL week two an average of eight spots higher on various 2014 power rankings. While the rankings really don’t mean anything it’s hard to turn your head away from the curiosity of the commotion they provide.

Consider the Profootballtalk.com pre-season power ranking that placed the Miami Dolphins squarely at the 28th spot. “Hello?, hey PFT, it’s for you…reality is calling.” The Dolphins never should have been ranked anywhere near the 28th spot in any power ranking but yet there they were which was actually a three point increase over PFT’s pre-pre-season rankings that had Miami ranked 31st. In fact many other sites had the team ranked in the mid-20’s. After their week one drubbing of the Patriots the team has started to climb.

On PFT the team is now ranked 20 of 32 teams but what is funnier is that the New England Patriots who lost last week still rank in the top 10 and in most cases top five. Apparently a loss to open the season to a team ranked in the low 20’s isn’t enough to get you knocked down a bit further. PFT has the Patriots ranked 4th, a one spot drop from last week. The tag to go with the drop? “The last time the Pats looked that bad in Week One, they won the Super Bowl.”

On CBSSports.com the Dolphins moved up six spots to the 13th position while the Patriots dropped five to the 9th. On NFL.com the Dolphins moved up nine positions to the 9th spot in a huge jump that saw the Patriots drop seven spots to number 12. At least someone sees that in week one you literally are only as good as your last loss. Walterfootball.com moved the Dolphins up one to 14 and the Patriots down one to five. ESPN has the Dolphins an eight spot jumper to 15 and the Patriots a seven spot faller. Is faller a word? It must be spell check accepted it, not that I would have changed it.

The reality of all these power rankings is the fact they mean absolutely nothing. NOTHING. Scream it with me…N O T H I N G !

O.k so we will see you next week when we see where the Dolphins are at after week two.
