Kansas City Chiefs Vs. Miami Dolphins: Connections
By Eric Roddy
After an ugly and disappointing loss to the Buffalo Bills, the Miami Dolphins will look to rebound against the Kansas City Chiefs at home this Sunday in Miami. While these two teams are not regular foes, there are many connections between the two teams, including the following.
1. CB Sean Smith, Kansas City Chiefs
The Miami Dolphins drafted Sean Smith 61st overall in the 2009 NFL Draft and hoped for Smith and Vontae Davis to be the next Patrick Surtain and Sam Madison. They weren’t. Smith now plays for the Chiefs after signing a 3 year, 18 million dollar deal (12 mil guaranteed) with KC back in 2013. He has always been a decent, but not great defensive back.
2. OT Branden Albert, Miami Dolphins
The Dolphins most significant off season move has solidified Ryan Tannehill’s blind side and become a leader on a renovated offensive line. The big man was drafted by KC back in 2008 15th overall in the first round, and was courted by both teams before signing with Miami back in March. The big man will face his former team on Sunday, and luckily will not have to face feared pass rusher Mike Devito, who is injured.
3. TE Anthony Fasano, Kansas City Chiefs
The former Phins tight end has found a new role in Andy Reid’s offense alongside QB Alex Smith in Kansas City. He played with the Dolphins from 2008 until 2012, and was a favorite target of QB Chad Pennington during Miami’s last division championship and 11-5 season in 2008. Fasano signed with the Chiefs in March of 2013.
4. WR Dwayne Bowe, Kansas City Chiefs
Just a few seasons ago, the Miami Dolphins were the front runners to land one of the three big free agent wide receivers. One of those was WR Dwayne Bowe. Instead of taking Bowe or then Packer Greg Jennings, the ‘Fins opted to sign speedster Mike Wallace, who has still yet to play up to his full potential during his time in Miami. In the meantime, Bowe has enjoyed a successful career in KC when not injured or suspended.
4. Doug Pederson, OC Kansas City Chiefs
Doug Pederson played QB for the Miami Dolphins on and off their practice squad and active roster from 1993-1995. Pederson helped legendary HC Don Shula record his 325th victory as a coach when starting QB Scott Mitchell was forced to leave the game with an injury against the Philadelphia Eagles in 1993. Now, Pederson is the offensive coordinator for the Chiefs.
