Miami Dolphins 50 At 50: Worst Draft Picks
By Brian Miller
Pat White enters his second season facing a lot of questions.
Number 2
Jamar Fletcher
Drew Brees anyone? The Dolphins were in dire need of a franchise quarterback but Dave Wannstedt believed that Jay Fiedler was the right guy to keep things rolling in Miami. What he didn’t need was another cornerback. Fletcher turned his first round draft grade into an eight year NFL career that spanned multiple cities. In his three seasons with Miami, Fletcher would start a total of six games, due to injury to the starters. In his full 8 NFL seasons, he started 10.
Number 1
Pat White
Where was the genius that was Bill Parcells? Surely it wasn’t in Miami. The Dolphins found success with the “Wild Cat” formation in 2008 and ran it to the playoffs. The Dolphins had quarterback issues and Pat White was never going to be an NFL starting quarterback. Parcells drafted White to run the Wild Cat as a quarterback and give the team a dual threat from the quarterback position but instead, White couldn’t play at the level of the NFL and teams had already figured out a way to stop the WC making White completely disposable and a wasted pick.
White played one season in Miami where he was more noted for a knockout blow he took along the sidelines trying to get out of bounds. He would stay out of the league for four seasons before joining the Washington Redskins for part of a season. Never becoming anything close to what Parcells envisioned.
