Vollmer was a late arrival to football playing his first game at the age of 14. Born in Germany, Vollmer has parlayed that late start into a starting job with the Patriots. Vollmer is a very solid blocker who handles pass protection and run blocking well.

Drafted in round two of the 2009 draft, Vollmer started his first game at left tackle in place of injured Matt Light. He would start four consecutive games at the position before being injured himself. In 2010 Vollmer started all 16 games at right tackle where he has entrenched himself as one of the leagues better tackles. While Vollmer has been very good he has battled Nate Solder for the starting job on and off since his arrival in the league. He has been injured several times including a broken leg in 2013 against the Miami Dolphins. Last season Vollmer started at right tackle during the Super Bowl.
