In 1971 the Kansas City Chiefs played host to the up and coming Miami Dolphins. The game would be played on Christmas day. The divisional round playoff game would last six quarters. 82 minutes and 40 seconds of game time. The battle between the teams was a defensive battle in the extra quarters.
Both teams mirrored each other on the field. The Chiefs took a 10-0 first quarter lead on a Jan Stenerud field goal and a seven yard Len Dawson pass. In quarter two it was the Dolphins who scored on a Larry Csonka one yard run and a Garo Yepremium field goal tying the game at 10 heading into half-time.
The 2nd half of the game saw the teams each trade touchdowns. In the 3rd quarter both teams scored seven and in the 4th both teams again put seven points on the board ending the game tied at 24. Heading into the first extra quarter both teams stepped up defensively and neither team was able to mount much yardage leading to another quarter of play. Then late in the second overtime period, Garo Yepremium kicked the game winning 37 yard field goal sending the Chiefs out of the playoffs.
Between the two teams, 14 future Hall of Fame players lined up on the field for the game.
