Wayne Huizenga was a great salesman. He lured Jimmy Johnson out of the studio and after Dave Wannstedt resigned he went full ahead with luring the hottest college coach, LSU’s Nick Saban. Saban was reluctant to take the job and make the jump into the NFL but Huizenga wouldn’t take no for an answer. He flew to Louisiana to meet with Saban and his wife and laid out an offer that couldn’t be refused.
Reluctantly Saban accepted the job and came to Miami with high expectations to turning around the franchise. Saban led the Dolphins to a 9-7 season that saw the team win it’s final six games. Fans and the team were excited about the direction the team was heading towards. In 2205 the Dolphins were heavy pre-season favorites to make the post-season but the Dolphins failed miserably finishing 6-10.
As the season progressed rumblings and rumors began to circulate that Saban would be leaving the NFL to return to the college ranks. Specifically at Alabama.
"I’m not going to be the Alabama coach”, Saban said on December 21st after another Dolphins loss."
Shortly after the season ended, Saban resigned his job in Miami and accepted the job as the head coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide. His contract was fully guaranteed regardless of whether he stayed in the NFL or not so off to Alabama Saban went with Wayne Huizenga’s money firmly in his bank account. The Dolphins began a downward spiral.
