Derrick Shelby

Impending free agent

Shelby is starting to come on strong now that he is seeing far more action on the field since Cameron Wake’s injury. This years free agent class at his position is considered weak by most standards and that will increase the value of what Shelby can make on the open market.

Shelby is finishing his 4th year with the Dolphins off his rookie contract. He has five total starts to his career with four of them coming this season. He has two interceptions, one touchdown, eight sacks, and 67 tackles. Those are not bad numbers given his limited playing time.

The answer to Shelby will hinge on what will happen with two other defensive ends that have made this list.

Re-sign or let go?

If I’m the Dolphins I’m keeping Shelby. He is young and ready for a more prominent role on the defense. Shelby is not someone you build your defense around and what scheme Miami will run next season will dictate his future. Shelby can be had for less than the market would demand if Miami can sign him before free agency begins. Once the league new year starts, Miami will not likely win any bidding wars for his service. Shelby still has areas that he needs to develop his game but consistent coaching will help that.
