Linebacker

No one was impressed with the play of the linebacker position last season and this includes the play of Jelani Jenkins who despite being injured played just above average. Jenkins could thrive with a better supporting cast around him especially at the middle linebacker position where Kelvin Sheppard looked lost most of the season. Despite his stats, Koa Misi has really not been an impact player for the Dolphins since being drafted.

Misi is interesting because he has bounced from outside to inside and back again the last three years but when he is in the game, he isn’t changing it. There are a lot of rumors floating around that Miami want’s to add two linebackers to the unit this off-season but finding two suitable options is easier said that done. It’s been quite awhile since the Dolphins had stable linebackers in the front seven of their defense. Perhaps maybe Mike Tannenbaum who was part of the Jets defensive make-over recognizes the importance of this position for his defense. Without a change, Miami will again struggle against the run.

While Miami has addressed the position, most of those additions came after the draft with a slew of undrafted rookies. Zach Vigil looks like he could potentially develop and Neville Hewitt played very well in his short stint as a starter giving the Dolphins reasonable optimism that he can be a full time back-up and grow into being a starter. Miami however can’t sit idly by and hope that these players get better. They must be pro-active.
