Round 4

Chris Jones – DE/DT – Mississippi State

Yes the Dolphins need defensive end and tackle help. Regardless of what happens with Vernon and Wake this off-season. Jones is a player who can come in and compete for playing time but not likely a day starter. If Cameron Wake is retained at a lower salary and then is used almost exclusively in passing situations, then Jones could be the fill in on rushing downs. Jones can slide inside as well which gives the Dolphins more depth along the defensive line. With Earl Mitchell a possible cap casualty and not very productive when he is starting, Jordan Phillips will see more playing time which leaves the Dolphins thin with quality depth. Jones could develop into a full-time starter by 2017.

Previous 4th round picks

2015 – Jamil Douglas: What will Douglas develop into? His rookie season was inconsistent but so was the entire offensive line. Can Douglas develop into a starting caliber offensive guard? While that’s unclear the Dolphins can’t wait around to find out.

2014 – Walt Aikens: Aikens started last season then was relegated back to a back-up role behind Michael Thomas. The Dolphins are searching for a safety to replace them both.

2013 – Jelani Jenkins: Jenkins has been a full-time starter for two seasons now and while last season saw him injured for the final games of the season, he is developing into a reliable outside linebacker. He still needs to work on his run stopping skills.

2013 – Dion Sims: After three seasons we still only see flashes of what Sims might become. Of course the Dolphins haven’t figured out how to integrate any of their tight-ends into an actual game plan.

2012 – Lamar Miller: An excellent value selection in 2012, Miller has been very consistent the last two seasons but the Dolphins opted to not use him as much in 2015 and that rubbed him a little wrong. He is an impending free agent and will receive a lot of looks on the open market.

2011 – Clyde Gates: Yeah, and then there was him.
