Top remaining NFL free agents at Dolphins needs
By Brian Miller
Entering the free agency period the Dolphins were expected to be big pursuers of Adam Jones. Jones opted to stay with the Bengals. Miami traded for Byron Maxwell who comes with a high price-tag, a shoulder injury, and off a season that was just average. Miami then turned around and released Brent Grimes creating the same hole they entered the off-season with.
Cornerback
Prince Amukamara
There is a lot of upside to the Giants Amukamara who at the age of 26 is just now hitting his prime. Amukamara could solidify the Dolphins cornerback position and if they choose to add another in the draft, will allow Miami to develop that player. He could be very good in the Dolphins defensive system.
Casey Hayward
The soon to be former Green Bay Packer has all the tools that Miami wants in a corner. Size and physicality included. Hayward is 26 and would be an instant upgrade over every other corner Miami has on their roster.
The corner market is thinning quickly in free agency. Sean Smith signed a deal with the Raiders to open day two.
Linebacker
The Dolphins traded for Kiko Alonso but make no mistake, the upside Alonso has is tempered by his injury history.
Jerrell Freeman
Freeman has been linked to the Falcons and as an option to return to the Colts. His interest has been a little lukewarm after a very good 2015.
Tahir Whitehead
Whitehead was an early rumored target for the Dolphins and still may be an option. The Dolphins added Alonso to the inside but are they really all that high on Koa Misi outside? Misi’s restructured deal is guaranteed, I believe, for 2016 but that does not mean he can’t be depth on the roster. Whitehead is a very solid athletic outside linebacker with good vision and closing speed. He is good in coverage as well.
