On The FinSide 7 round Dolphins mock draft
By Brian Miller
The final rounds of the draft could bring competition at any number of positions. Miami could look for another wide-receiver, a defensive lineman, linebacker, safety, or possibly even a quarterback.
Round 6
Cat – Kelvin Taylor – RB – Florida
Paul – Devon Johnson – RB – Marshall
Both Cat and Paul believe that the Dolphins could draft a second running back in the 6th round. I disagree here given the fact Miami has other areas to address and the position has already been addressed. Both Cat and Paul selected running backs in round three and I won’t believe Miami would draft two this year.
Tyriq McCord – OLB – Miami, Fl.
McCord is a 6’3″ 263 pound outside linebacker that will have time to develop behind Koa Misi on the outside. The Dolphins addressed the linebacker position with Kiko Alonso and added in this mock Scooby Wright, III but linebacker is a bigger need than some realize. Misi struggles at times with outside containment and his inconsistent against the run. The Dolphins may want to start grooming an eventual replacement.
Round 7
Cat – pick A – Josh Woodrum – QB – Liberty
Cat – Pick B – Jimmy Landes – long snapper – Baylor
Paul – Pick A – Kevin Hogan – QB – Stanford
Paul – Pick B – Pearce Slater – OT – San Diego State.
When drafting in round seven it’s really more about finding players that have the ability to compete for a roster spot rather than fill a specific need. For the Dolphins, finding a player that will potentially help on special teams and develop is more important than filling a specific position.
It’s for this reason that I agree with both Cat and Paul in the selection of a quarterback and I tend to lean with Paul on this one that Miami will look at Kevin Hogan of Stanford. Hogan can spend the 2016 season on the inactive list or even on the practice squad learning behind Matt Moore and Bethel McCloud-Thompson.
My picks
Kevin Hogan – QB – Stanford
Jarron Jones – DT – Notre Dame
Jones is a bit raw but has a lot of physical attributes you look for in a defensive lineman. Miami drafted Jordan Phillips last season but thus far he has not made the impact that was expected. Miami needs to have enough bodies to rotate on the defensive line.
Positions filled:
Cat – 1 cornerback, 1 defensive end, 2 running backs, 2 guards, 1 quarterback, 1 special teams player (long snapper)
Paul – 1 linebacker, 1 cornerback, 2 running backs, 1 guard, 1 tight end, 1 quarterback, 1 offensive tackle
Brian – 2 cornerbacks, 1 guard, 2 linebackers, 1 running back, 1 quarterback, 1 defensive tackle.
