The Dolphins had been spinning their wheels under Wannstedt. His three drafts had provided only a handful of solid contributors. Making matters worse was a salary cap out of control and a team that was on downward spiral.

Then owner Wayne Huizenga removed the GM tag from Wannstedts job title and handed over the personnel decisions to Rick Speilman. 2004 would be his first and only draft with the Dolphins.

In round one Spielman feared that another team was going to trade up in front of the Dolphins for guard Vernon Carey. Speilman sent a 4th round pick the Vikings to move up one spot to draft Carey. Carey would play for the Dolphins for nine seasons. He started 107 of his 121 games. While Carey was inconsistent he still gave the Dolphins some continuity on the line.

The rest of the Dolphins draft was not very good. 4th round pick Will Poole lasted one season as did 5th round pick Tony Bua. Rex Hadnot a 6th rounder lasted four and 7th round draft pick Derrick Pope lasted four.
