Following today’s practice Miami Dolphins head coach spoke briefly with the media about Ryan Tannehill and made it clear that they simply don’t know what is going to happen.

Of all the misinformation that floated around on Thursday, Gase cleared up one bit of information, there is a possibility that Tannehill will need surgery. When asked about the Tannehill situation, Gase made it clear that “everything is on the table.” When asked specifically about Tannehill potentially needing surgery, Gase said, “yes”.

So now we know that they don’t know. Armando Salguero reported today on Twitter that Tannehill spent the practice watching from inside the team cafeteria with his leg up and in a brace. The cafeteria looks out onto the field. Tannehill and the Dolphins are waiting for another opinion on his MRI.

Gase didn’t stop with just the Tannehill talk however. He was asked very clearly, “Is Matt Moore the starting quarterback if Ryan Tannehill is not?” (reporter not identified). Gase said “right now, Matt is our quarterback”.

It’s not a glowing endorsement for certain but it is what we expected. Moore is the starter right now and whether he stays the starter or not remains to be seen. When asked, Gase said there was no timetable for adding another quarterback. When asked, Gase said they were waiting to find out what was going on with Tannehill. When asked, Gase said that he “hadn’t really gotten there yet” in regards to adding another quarterback.

So are the Dolphins looking at a potential quarterback that would take over for Moore sooner rather than later? If so that QB has to be Jay Cutler who has reportedly said he will not take a back-up role and knows the offense. But again, we don’t know.

Gase is right about the timing but the Dolphins will need to do something at some point. Ryan Tannehill is not going to walk back onto the field on Monday and take first team reps. Frankly he isn’t coming back this training camp and being ready for week one is a stretch even if nothing has changed at all in his knee.

At the same time, Miami can’t simply pick up the phone and call Jay Cutler or Colin Kaepernick and bring them into the fold. If Tannehill misses three weeks of the regular season then Miami would be spending money they didn’t need to spend. If this is the case Miami will sign a quarterback to compete in camp for a back-up spot to Moore instead of a potential replacement for Moore if he can’t get the job done.

For now, once again, it’s a waiting game and while we are waiting it’s obvious the Dolphins are too.
