One area that the Miami Dolphins have not changed in is their inability to consistently cover tight-ends. Charles Clay is not the best TE in the NFL but last season he played well against, you guessed it, the Dolphins.

In their first meeting in 2016 the Dolphins held Clay to only two catches and under 30 yards but in the final meeting of the league season Clay scored two touchdowns on eight receptions for 85 yards. This while Sammy Watkins was posting a 154 yards on the Dolphins secondary.

The Dolphins won the game in overtime and on another 200 yard effort by Jay Ajayi but Miami can’t rely on Ajayi to bail the defense out against players like Clay. The fact that Watkins is no longer in Buffalo doesn’t mean Clay is not an issue. In fact, he might be more so.

With Watkins gone, Tyrod Taylor may turn to Clay more frequently due to their knowledge of each other. The Bills will need Clay to step up in 2017 and it is very possible that Clay has his best season since arriving in Buffalo. Which most Bills fans might conclude it isnt’ saying a whole lot.
