Dolphins continue to lose in ugly fashion
By Brian Miller
The Miami Dolphins are 1-2 on the season and the two losses are by a combined 40-6 point differential. Today in London, another ugly loss for a team that looks to be going nowhere.
It is hard to believe that only four weeks ago fans were talking about a team who was using the Hurricane Irma adversity as a motivator. The three weeks of long distance travel included a two week stay in California. A flight back to Miami after the teams first game then on to New York to face the Jets and now off to London. It is still no excuse.
Someone owes fans an answer. The play last week was horrible but the play today was even worse. Jay Cutler is making Ryan Tannehill look like a future Hall of Fame quarterback. Imagine if he didn’t already know the system.
Miami’s shutout loss today was so bad that Miami seemed to lose more yards on penalties than they gained on the field. It’s an exaggeration but not by much. Miami’s first drive was what fans had long hoped for and hadn’t really seen since Los Angeles but a jump ball in the end-zone to Julius Thomas was intercepted. It was really the only shot they had all game.
On that play, Thomas was out of position, looked more like a wannabe defender and the Saints cornerback was in perfect position for an uncontested interception. Thomas barely made a move to stop the play.
This has been the Dolphins season. Had it not been for a missed field goal in week one the Dolphins would be 0-3. Had it not been for last second, literally, touchdown against the Jets Miami would have been shut-out twice in as many weeks. The Dolphins return home for the first time next weekend and the Tennessee Titans could make their debut a miserable one.
Miami simply doesn’t have many answers at the moment. The offense is anemic and devoid of life. Jay Cutler has no emotion, which we were aware of but while his usually “I could not care less” attitude seems even more true this year.
The injuries, the travel, the change at quarterback, all are nothing more than excuses and the Dolphins need to find answers internally. Whatever isn’t clicking has to be found. In 2016 Miami looked almost as bad but not quite. They should have been 0-5 instead of 1-4 as then Browns kicker Cody Parkey missed three field goals in their only win.
The Dolphins rallied for six straight on their way to their first playoff appearance since 2008. Can they repeat that success in 2017? They very well may need to if they want to turn this around. In 2016 Adam Gase cut Dallas Thomas, Jamil Douglas, and Billy Turner. It sent a message to the rest of the team. He may need to do it again.
The loss drops Miami at 1-4 in games played in London.
