Cutler to start against Raiders next Sunday night
By Brian Miller
The Matt Moore experiment lasted one game and Adam Gase will likely not hear the boos and cat calls against Jay Cutler moving forward.
According to the Miami Dolphins head coach, Jay Cutler will start next Sunday night against the Oakland Raiders. Gase, speaking with local media today is “pissed” about the offensive struggles. He didn’t sound all too thrilled with Jay Ajayi or Jarvis Landry’s performance on Thursday night either.
"(The ongoing struggle with the offensive line, do you see it as fixable with the current group?) – “To me it comes down to more than just the offensive line. The majority of the time, the offensive at least knows who to go to and knows what to do. You’ve got to get the other guys to know what to do too. (The offensive line) can’t block the running back’s guy. The running back, we never block the right guy. I don’t even know if we know who we’ve got. We’ve got to get that fixed. They can’t block their guy too. (The offensive line is) trying to do what they can and they’re fighting. There’s times where I wished they would do things better, but at least I’m getting effort.” – Via the Miami Dolphins"
Jay Ajayi was also mentioned in regards to him doing his job running the ball but whatever Adam Gase thinks he is seeing, he needs to take a closer look because Ajayi was being hit two yards from the line of scrimmage.
As for Cutler, well that is another demon entirely. Gase said that he could have played Thursday night and that he will be starting next Sunday. That is not a lot of comfort given the fact that Cutler hasn’t exactly been lights out with this offense.
"(With QB Jay Cutler, obviously you addressed it after the game last night, but are you cautiously optimistic he’ll be healthy to play against Oakland?) – “Cutler, you’re talking about? Yes, he’s playing. He could have played last week.”"
There are right now a million things wrong with this offense. Gase has gone so far as to say that the team is not only failing to execute the plays but he is at the point where he can’t simplify them anymore. He says the players are not studying them enough.
"(How long have you sensed issues with studying or not studying enough?) – “Two years. Yes, I’ve been addressing this for a while, so I’m kind of fed up with it.”"
Indeed. So are the fans. Gase did not however say anything in regards to the horrible play calling. Something that he himself is responsible for. It’s hard to know exactly where the problem is considering there are so many units working, apparently, against each other. The offensive line isn’t doing its job, the quarterback isn’t doing his, the running backs apparently are missing their assignments, Julius Thomas is still on the team, and Adam Gase’s play calling is a head-scratcher.
The one thing we can count on is a long season if they don’t get it fixed right now.
