No trade of Jarvis Landry does not mean he is in teams future

The Miami Dolphins entertained thoughts of trading star wide-receiver Jarvis Landry today but in the end, nothing happened with it. There is no reason to celebrate just yet.

While the trade deadline has passed the Miami Dolphins still do not have their star receiver under a long-term deal. In fact, Landry himself will not even discuss a new deal until after the season is over. Not that the Dolphins have given any indications that they are in a hurry to get it done.

So will Landry be in the teams long-term plans? Hard to say but that may need to be up to Landry now. The fact that the Dolphins thought about trading Landry should be a red flag for the future. You don’t entertain trade offers for a player that you believe is going to be with you for a long time.

The Dolphins reportedly were offered a second round draft pick for Landry on Tuesday but declined. It’s unclear if they declined due to the compensation or the fact that it was the Buffalo Bills who were offering it. It was also reported that the Dolphins were getting calls from another AFC East team. The Patriots are in desperate need for a receiver.

Josina Anderson of ESPN tweeted earlier in the day that she had received word that Miami had told Landry that he was not going to be traded today. Yet the team continued to apparently field offers for him throughout the day. Later in the afternoon, Adam Schefter “tweeted” that per a league source Landry was not being traded.

None of that adds up to the Dolphins keeping Landry beyond 2017. Miami is pretty certain that if Landry leaves in free agency that they will get a 3rd round compensatory pick for his departure. It is possible that Miami felt the best offer they were getting was the comp pick.

For now the Landry saga will continue and the end of the year will now mark the next milestone for his future. Where he will go could be up to him. Landry now holds all the cards in front of him and if the Dolphins low ball him or he doesn’t believe Miami legitimately wants him in Miami, he can refuse to sign an offer and hit free agency. Of course the Dolphins could place the franchise tag on Landry and pay him just north of $15 million in 2018.
