Dolphins one game from post-season spot and half way to a top ten draft pick

The Miami Dolphins have no identity right now and they don’t even know if they are closer to a playoff spot or closer to a top ten draft pick.

That really encompasses the Dolphins season thus far and in reality it’s not a bad thing. Yet. Miami is one game out of the sixth seed in the AFC so obviously they are closer to a playoff berth but the team isn’t exactly playing good football and the toughest portion of their schedule begins following next weeks Tampa Bay game.

Miami will face Denver, Kansas City, and two games against the Patriots and Bills. Miami is still in the middle of the road in terms of league standings. They are 19th in the league. 14 spots from a top overall pick and only one game out of a top ten pick. Here is how odd this season has gone for the NFL this year.

Miami is 4-5 and if the playoffs started today they would miss out on the sixth seed by one game but they would also potentially miss out on a top 5-10 pick by one game. Six teams have only three wins, one game behind Miami. The Colts have three wins but seven losses.

The drop off from the three win teams is two games with the Giants and 49’ers each with one win and the Browns who have yet to win a game at 0-9.

Miami has one game remaining against teams with a worse record than they do. Sunday against the Buccaneers. A loss on Sunday puts Miami in the thick of the top ten chase. Not that they want to be there.

In the AFC Miami is faring a little better obviously. They are in the 9th position at 4-5 tied with the Raiders and the Ravens and one game behind the Bills. Miami does not own head to head tie-breakers on the Raiders or Ravens. Just below the Dolphins are the Jets who Miami split with.

There is a lot of season left to play and the Dolphins are by no means out of the post-season. They just simply don’t know if they are closer to making the post-season or closer to having a top ten draft pick. In other words, the Dolphins need to start playing football instead of spending three quarters in a daze.

Sadly it is becoming that time of the NFL season where we have to start thinking of such things.
