The Miami Dolphins run a weekly series on their website called “Voice of the Fan”. In this case it’s the fans who run Dolphins themed websites and podcasts.

This week the Dolphins wanted to know what our favorite November game throughout history was.

Many fans will remember the “clock play” game. Who could forget it! Dan Marino lines up and fakes the spike to stop the clock and fires a rifle shot to Mark Ingram for the game winning touchdown. The play was actually an idea from back-up quarterback Bernie Kosar. Following the plays success, which culminated a 28 point 2nd half comeback, Marino met Kosar on the sidelines.

Miami has played a lot of memorable games in November throughout history but for me, only one game comes to mind immediately. The 1993 Thanksgiving Day game against the Dallas Cowboys. The “Leon Lett” game.

The game itself was good but what I remember the most is that this was the first Thanksgiving I spent with my new wife and her family. They are not much for football fans and while they claim to follow the Cleveland Browns they more or less follow them when they are winning. Guess how long that has been?

So here we are on Thanksgiving over at one of the new in-laws houses and I convince them to put the game on for me. Now they have seen me watch football but they have never “really” seen me watch football. Amid cat calls of “He’s gonna miss it,” in reference to Pete Stoyonovich’s late game field goal, I simply sighed when they snickered as it was blocked.

I got up to turn the TV off but there was Leon Lett giving us that last chance. I still can hear Bob Trumpy say “Someone touched the ball. It’s Leon Lett, Noooooo”. While I still maintain that Miami recovered that ball in the endzone for touchdown, the Dolphins made the kick and won the game.

Needless to say, my new family saw a new side of me they had not seen before. The yelling cheering, drop down to my knees with my fists in the air. Yeah it took them years to watch another game with after that one!
