The Miami Dolphins are reaching new lows this season as their power rankings continue to drop. It’s not likely to climb this week

When the Miami Dolphins started the 2007 season, a general NFL power ranking consensus had them ranked number 20. At season’s end they were ranked dead last. The 1-15 team under Cam Cameron produced little offensively and gave up the most points in the NFL.

When the 2009 season started the Dolphins began the season ranked 26th. Of course that changed by the year’s end when Miami won the AFC East and advanced to the post-season. Since then the Dolphins haven’t fallen far from the low teens to high 20’s.

Until now.

This season was supposed to be Miami’s bid to challenge the Patriots but that has not come close to happening. Miami has struggled in all areas of the game. Offense, defense, special teams, you name it they have had issues.

Adam Gase has been downplaying a lot of things lately. He has said that the continued penalties is fixable but they haven’t been fixed. He said that his wide-receiver unit could be hard to stop but they aren’t. The offensive line seems to get a pass every week. Apparently the only ones who can’t see the Oline as a problem are the Dolphins themselves.

The rest of the NFL sees it. In most power rankings this week the Dolphins are almost dead last. In fact the NFL’s most recent poll has the Dolphins dropping two more spots to 28. Below the Dolphins? The New York Giants who have won two games, the Colts who have won three, the 49’ers who have won one, and the Cleveland Browns who are probably asking why the Dolphins are not on their schedule this year.

Power rankings, on the upside, mean nothing. They represent opinions of the writers and are basically supposed to give an indication of a team’s performance. So in that regard the Dolphins are probably about where they should be based on how they have been playing.

The upsetting part of all of this is that the Dolphins have talent. Cam Wake, Ndamukong Suh, Davon Godchaux, William Hayes, and Charles Harris on the defensive line. Landry, Parker, and Stills at wide-receiver. These are the guys that make this season hard to stomach. Too much talent to only have four wins. Too much talent to be playing so poorly.
