Derwin James – S – Florida State

There are a lot of draft pundits who see James as potentially the best product in this years draft. Versatile, James can play safety, corner, and can play up near the line if needed even WILL linebacker. The best possible situation is to put James at safety next to Reshad Jones and move T.J. McDonald into a linebackers role where he is capable of playing.

James is a very good prospect and the closer to the draft we go the higher he seems to be drawing interest. Miami could use the versatility of James immediately despite having Cordrea Tankersley and Xavien Howard manning the corners.

He is a player that frankly doesn’t need to come off the field. He is a strong hitter with good open field tackle potential. He doesn’t bite often and tends to stay in coverage well but the knock on him is that he struggles with slot coverages, he is better at covering tight-ends. It would be surprising to see James at 11 but if he is there it would be hard to pass on the young talent.
