The draft is a few weeks away.  The speculation around the league and all available media sources is that there could be four quarterbacks taken in the top ten.  Who selects who is a completely different story.  Will the Patriots or Bills now trade up to the top 10, as both teams have two first round picks? If they do, what happens to the Dolphins at 11? Well, let’s put that decision on you.

Pretend for a moment, you are the Miami Dolphins General Manager.  Based on how the draft unfolds what will your decision be, when the Miami Dolphins are on the clock.  For now, let’s assume the following:

1st overall – Cleveland Browns  – Sam Darnold QB – USC

The Browns will not trade the first overall pick and they will select the QB that they believe is the best player available.

2nd overall – New York Giants –  Josh Allen – QB – Wyoming

The Giants don’t select 2nd overall often.  I think the last time they did they selected Lawrence Taylor.  This could be Eli last year in New York, so they need to start thinking about his eventual replacement.  The Giants might be eager to trade this pick, but for now, they build for the future.

3rd overall – New York Jets – Baker Mayfield – QB – Oklahoma

Baker in the bright lights of New York City – this is a match made in heaven.

4th overall – TRADE – Buffalo Bills – Josh Rosen – QB – UCLA

The run at QB make sense.  All the above teams don’t have a legit QB they can build around.  The Bills needed to make a move to jump ahead of any other competitors – the fact that they have two attractive first round picks makes sense for the Browns who will leave the first round with 3 first round picks.

5th overall – Denver Broncos – Bradley Chubb – DE – North Carolina

The Broncos are the team that got stood up, at the prom. They did sign Case this off-season, and will roll the dice with him this upcoming season.  They now have Chubb and Miller as their top bookends which is crazy.

6th overall – Indianapolis Colts – Saquon Barkley RB – Penn State

No idea how the best player in the draft lasted to the 6th overall selection, but the Colts would run to the podium if this happens.  Barkley is a beast and pairing him with Luck, you now have a legit backfield.

7th overall – Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Minkah Fitzpatrick – CB- Alabama

I’m not sure where Minkah will line up, he’s one of those hybrid players and Tampa takes (in their mind) the best secondary player off the board.

8th overall – Chicago Bears – Quenton Nelson – G- Notre Dame

This makes sense.  The Bears just lost their starting guard to the Dolphins and don’t have an in-house replacement.  Nelson is being compared to Zach Martin.

9th overall – San Francisco 49ers – Trmaine Edmunds – LB – Virginia Tech

The 49ers are quietly putting together a stacked team. They don’t have a legit number 1 WR, but there isn’t a player worthy of that selection in the top 10.  With the issues surrounding Ruben Foster, the 49ers select the best defensive prospect in the NFL draft.

10th overall – Oakland Raiders – Denzel Ward – DB – Ohio State

The Raider don’t have depth at cornerback.  I mean they have players, but they aren’t starters. They lost their two starting cornerbacks (Sean Smith is in jail…that’s crazy) so they need to rebuild their secondary.  They look to bring in the best cornerback available.

So now, the Dolphins are on the clock… let’s take a second to look at the board and see who is available:

  • Derwin James – FS/CB – Florida State
    • Would be able to fill in and be that hybrid player within the secondary that the Dolphins have been missing for years – they would finally have someone that can cover opposing Tight ends.
  • Roquan Smith – LB – Georgia
    • A tackling machine. There is no better read and re-act linebacker in this draft.
  • Mile McGlinchey – OT- Notre Dame
    • Another first round pick on the oline? Yes, I understand that, but Mike would provide insurance on Ja’Wuan James who has never played a full season.
  • Vita Vea – DT – Washington
    • The most common selection on mock drafts based on the Dolphins releasing Suh. Vea looks like the next Haloti Ngata.
  • Trade back
    • Is there a team that covet those 4 players more than the Dolphins? If so, should the Dolphins trade back, obtain more picks?  But if they do, they miss out on top talent level (remember Earl Thomas vs Jared Odrick)

The clock is ticking…what’s your choice and why?
