NFL Draft history: 5 quarterbacks taken 11th overall
By Brian Miller
The Miami Dolphins hold the 11th overall pick in this years draft and many think they will take a quarterback. Historically only five QB’s have been taken 11th overall.
As mock drafts continue to project a potential fall of Josh Rosen next Thursday night to the Dolphins history has something to say about quarterbacks at pick 11. And it is not all good.
To be clear this is not to assume that Rosen or any of the top four quarterbacks will fall to 11 in fact it is highly unlikely because most mock drafts don’t account for trades and several teams including the Bills and Cardinals could move up for a quarterback. The Bills most assuredly will try.
Through history, well from 1966 when the Dolphins held their first draft, five quarterbacks have been taken. The Dolphins have made a selection at 11 only one time in their history. Bill Stanfill was taken in 1969 and that worked out pretty well for the Dolphins.
Two of the five 11th overall quarterbacks played for the Dolphins and it didn’t turn out well as you will see below.
In 1968 the Detroit Lions selected quarterback Greg Landry with the 11th overall pick. Landry would play from 1968 to 1984 leaving the Lions in 1978. Landry would pass for over 16,000 yards over his career in a very solid career that spanned three teams.
In 1972 the Green Bay Packers drafted Jerry Tagge at pick 11. He lasted only three years in the league before leaving the NFL all together.

1999 saw Daunte Culpepper drafted by the Vikings. A knee injury would end seven seasons with the Vikings but it was the Dolphins under Nick Saban who felt the knee was a better bet than the shoulder of Drew Brees. The Dolphins opted to trade a 2nd round pick for the quarterback who played only four games for the Dolphins before playing seven more for the Raiders before bowing out of the NFL. That guy Brees is still playing.
2004 was the best of the five as the Steelers added Ben Roethlisberger who is in the twilight of his HOF career. Roethlisberger has been the steady quarterback that Pittsburgh needed since his arrival.
The last quarterback drafted 11th overall was Jay Cutler. The Broncos made Cutler their guy. A big armed gunslinger type quarterback, Cutler could never take the Broncos to the next level and lasted only three seasons with Denver after being drafted. He was traded to the Bears following his only Pro-Bowl season. Cutler would spend five seasons with Chicago before coming out of retirement in 2017 to lead the Dolphins to a 6-10 record.
There is no guarantees that the Dolphins will stay put at pick 11 or that a quarterback will be there but if they do and if there is, the Dolphins better hope for a better product than the last two 11th overall picks that ended up on their roster.
