My annual Dolphins mock draft (with trades)
Round 4, Pick 112 (Trade with Bengals)
Due to a ‘run’ on tight end prospects, I decided to move up from pick 4-123 to 4-112 and gave up 7-227. With this pick, I selected TE Ian Thomas. At 6’4″ and 259 lbs, Thomas would make a great dual-threat tight end in Adam Gase’s system; especially in the red zone.
Round 4, Pick 131
While it’s debatable that he lasts this long, I couldn’t pass up the chance to select QB Mike White when he was available with this pick. White doesn’t possess the ‘flash’ that the top quarterbacks offer but during his two years at Western Kentucky he completed over 65% of his passes and had a 4/1 TD to INT ratio. Let him learn for a year, or two, behind Tannehill and the Dolphins just might have quarterback of the future.
Round 5, Pick 155
While I believe that DT Deatrin Senat will be gone by this point, he was available in the 5th round in 10/15 mock drafts I conducted. At 6’1″, Senat is smaller/shorter than many evaluators would like but he just continued to get better each year he played at Central Florida. More of a ‘gap penetrator’ than ‘run stuffer’, Senat doesn’t fill the void left by Suh but he should compete for a share of the snaps in the DT rotation.
Round 6, Pick 209
Everything I wrote above about Senat applies to this next draft pick: DT Foley Fatukasi. While Fatukasi is more ‘prototypical’ at 6’4″ 315 lbs, he’s better at slipping blockers than taking them on.
Round 7, Pick 229
Being the second best kicker in the draft may mean that Kicker Eddy Piniero is gone before this selection. That being said, he was available in every mock I conducted, so the Dolphins are happy to have him. Piniero possesses not only overall accuracy but showed the leg to make kicks from beyond 50 yards.
