While hard to imagine, the AFC East could all draft quarterbacks in round one setting up an interesting dynamic for the future of the division.

When the NFL Draft concludes its first round late Thursday night the entire AFC East might be looking at a bunch of new quarterbacks. In fact the entire AFC East could all draft quarterbacks in round one.

The Jets are sitting at three where they will draft a quarterback and the Buffalo Bills who are at 12 have two first round picks and will likely move up to draft a quarterback at pick two, five, or six. The Dolphins at 11 are often talked about as a team who might move up to draft a quarterback. Now the Patriots can be added to the equation.

With two picks in the first round, 23 and 31, the Patriots rumor mill is churning and the latest rumors indicate that the Patriots may be looking at moving up for Louisville QB Lamar Jackson. This would be an interesting development.

There is still a lot of talk surrounding the relationship of Tom Brady and Bill Belichick and Bob Kraft. No one has denied that a bit of friction exists and there are plenty in the local Boston media who believe that the trade of Jimmy Garrappolo didn’t sit well with Belichick.

  • Tom Brady wants to play another four years unless he really doesn’t but no one can truly believe that Brady will get what he wants. At least not if Belichick is still the coach. Belichick could be looking to find Brady’s replacement now so that the can coach that QB on how to do things his way when Brady finally does retire.

Why this becomes interesting is that only the Jets and Bills are believed to be looking for day one quarterback starters. This means that both the Dolphins and the Patriots are going to go with a developmental approach. In what could be as little as two years, all four of the AFC East teams could be starting a quarterback from not only this draft class but from the first round.

The last time that happened was in 1983 when the Jets drafted Ken O’Brien, the Bills drafted Jim Kelly, New England drafted Tony Eason, and of course the Dolphins drafted Dan Marino.

That class proved to be one of the best in the NFL’s history which also included John Elway who is now calling the shots for Denver and could trade with one of the AFC East teams who covet a QB. Ironically of all those QB’s taken in 1983 only Elway won a Super Bowl.

While it is hard to believe that the draft will shake out this way it is still a possibility and one that could add a lot of drama to the future of the AFC East.
