Miami Dolphins created a lot of change offensively ahead of 2018
By Brian Miller
The Miami Dolphin’s 2018 season is going to look a lot different from what it did in 2017. Now they have to find a way to turn that new look into a winner.
For all of the off-season moves that the Dolphins made this year the one that stands out the most is the one they didn’t make. They didn’t draft a quarterback. That is a good thing.
Drafting a quarterback was the wish of a lot of fans but most of those fans also believed that staying put at 11 was more important than mortgaging the team’s future to find a player that would sit for two years. Ryan Tannehill is the quarterback. Get over it.
This years team is not last years team and while there is still some work to be done tweaking the roster, those moves won’t come until the end of this month when $17 million is added back into the Dolphins salary cap. Here is a look at the offensive roster as it stands today.
Quarterback
2017 – Jay Cutler and Matt Moore
2018 – Ryan Tannehill and Brock Osweiler
The Dolphins believe that Tannehill’s knee is fully recovered and after having his first surgery last year there is no reason to believe he will not be ready or risk further damage by practicing this year. Tannehill has had a full season to recover and should be fine. The contention was the back-up plan if he re-injured his knee. It’s a real concern with any player dealing with an ACL injury but today’s medical advances have made that recovery far more successful. Believe it or not there was a time when an ACL almost certainly meant two years out of the game and potentially a career ending injury. Not any more.
Matt Moore was a capable back-up but one who could come off the bench and lead not a player you would want to play over consecutive weeks. He is no longer in Miami and is replaced by Osweiller. Osweiller has become a journeyman quarterback but Adam Gase believes that he can be a reliable back-up and a starter if need be.
