Miami Dolphins training camp is one day in and already there are rumblings about who is rising and falling. Enter David Fales into the quarterback competition.

David Fales entered the off-season as the Dolphins third string quarterback but if you are thinking he is just a camp body it might be time to think again. There is something about Fales that Adam Gase really likes.

In March, the Dolphins re-signed the quarterback who was impressive in a meaningless season finale against Buffalo last season. Fales turned around and made a case for himself with crisp throws during the teams off-season practices.

Then came the first day of training camp.

To say that Fales was great would be a lie and big overreaction but he didn’t practice badly. What he did do well was outshine Brock Osweiler. The only quarterback not named Tannehill with any monetary guarantee.

Osweiler looked horrible. He threw the first interception of practice and reports from those who saw practice live said he could have thrown a couple of more. At one point, a fan told me that the stands began to boo Osweiler during one series.

If there was thought that Osweiler had the back-up job locked down, it might be a good idea to quell those thoughts for now. Fales is doing what he needs to do and Adam Gase is noticing. He praised Fales for his work in the Buffalo game last season and again, re-signed him in March.

Some believe that Osweiler was Gase’s back-up pick having a history with him in Denver however there are some in the media who believe it was Mike Tannenbaum who convinced Gase to bring him in. Whether that is true or not will likely never be known.

What we do know is that David Fales is making a case for himself. It’s one day but there is some actual game film of him and if he continues to outperform the other competing quarterbacks, he could emerge as the top back-up to Ryan Tannehill.

David Fales is someone to keep an eye on this camp.
