Dolphins have a three man race for cornerback opposite Howard
By Brian Miller
The Miami Dolphins should be thrilled with the predicament they have at cornerback as a three-way race is emerging for the starting job.
Xavien Howard has one side of the field locked down but who plays across from him is up in the air. Competition is a good thing and right now it’s anyone’s game. Entering camp it was hard to say who would challenge Cordrea Tankersley on the outside but now it is become apparent.
Tankersley had a decent 2017 season. He started slow but by seasons end had found a nice groove in his game. Entering camp this year it appeared that he would keep that job but now, he is going to have to fight for it and this is going to make all of the corners better.
What we know right now is that the Dolphins are going to go with Bobby McCain as the nickel corner and rookie Minkah Fitzpatrick is going to be a third on-field safety. The drama that will unfold will be at corner.
Through three days of camp so far, the Dolphins are impressed with the play of Tankersley but he is being pushed by Torry McTyer and Tony Lippett. Lippett is coming off an Achilles injury that sidelined him all of last season. McTyer is looking strong and is getting better with each practice. Both he and Lippett have had good practices thus far.
The solid practices is creating a three-man competition for what is one job. There are back-ups but teams like to keep the same corners on the field as much as possible because it keeps continuity in the secondary. Someone has to emerge as the starter. Up until now it was assumed that person would be Tankersley. Not, not so sure.
It’s exciting to have football back and it’s even more exciting when a camp battle breaks out that you were not 100% expecting. The next few weeks are going to be intriguing.
