The Miami Dolphins took the field this morning for practice number four and rookie tight-end Mike Gesicki got a two spot jump to the number one squad but it may not last.

Fans are dying to see what Mike Gesicki can do on the field but thus far through three days of camp they have had to watch him run with the third team units along with fellow rookie Durham Smythe. Today, that changed.

Gesicki got a good days work in with the first team unit today along with MarQueis Gray but it may not have been a promotion necessarily. A.J. Derby who has been running with the first team units through the first three days was out of practice with a foot injury.

The injury isn’t expected to be serious but it did open the door for the rookie to get some reps. Instead of moving Gavin Escobar or Thomas Duarte up the Dolphins needed to see what Gesicki could do.

There wasn’t a lot of talk about Gesicki today but it was noted that he was doing better with his blocking assignments at times. That’s a good sign. The Dolphins didn’t draft him to be a blocker though and the team has yet to showcase him in their offense through the first four days.

That will change. Adam Gase said earlier this week that Gesicki would see more receiver work when the team started doing more specific offensive drills, notably red-zone work. Fans are waiting to see what he brings to the offense especially since many believe the Dolphins should have drafted Dallas Goedert who went a few picks later.

Miami hasn’t given any inclination on who they plan on keeping this year at tight-end but it’s assumed they will keep Gray, Derby, Durham Smythe, and Gesicki. The question now is whether or not Gesicki did enough today to stay on the first team unit if Derby returns for the next practice.
