Cam Wake says there is no room for softness, they aren’t quarterbacks
By Brian Miller
Sometime you have to love the honesty of a defensive player. Cam Wake is one of those veterans that no longer needs to soften his comments, especially about being soft.
Wake was asked after practice today about new defensive line coach Kris Kocurek, a rather intense coach that could potentially rub people the wrong way. Cameron Wake isn’t one of those players.
Wake said he loves the “intensity” that Kocurk brings to the defensive line. In fact, it’s a man’s game.
"“I personally … I love it. I think it’s a man’s game and there is no room for softness, especially the d-line. This is not quarterbacks, this is not receivers. – MiamiDolphins.com"
It would be an interesting reaction read by a receiver or quarterback who hears or sees those comments. Wake is a big man and strong as hell. But he also is right. There is no room for playing soft as a defensive lineman. To an extent you need to have a mean streak. A mental make-up that almost wants to kill the other person.
Wake continued.
"You’ve got to go in there and put your hands on somebody play in and play out. You’ve got to impose your will play in and play out. If there is any chink in the armor, you’re probably going to get weeded out of that room. He’s a guy that’s old school, hard-nosed."
When asked about Kocurek making it through camp, his voice, Wake said “No. It’s already taken a hit.” Wake said he is going to need some honey and tea.
On some good Charles Harris news, Wake said that he thinks the second year player has had the best off-season and clarified not just on the defense but the whole team. Wake said that Harris had been working out all off-season and it shows.
That’s good news for Harris and for the Dolphins who felt he did enough last year but know there is more to Harris. Harris could be the future at defensive end and might replace Wake when he finally retires.
