Bobby Beathard is not a name that is recognized by man as a Miami Dolphins but on Saturday, another former Dolphins will go into the Hall of Fame.

The Pro-Football Hall of Fame will begin its annual festival on Thursday when the Hall of Fame game kicks off. On Saturday night the Hall will inducte the new crop of inductees. Hard to believe it has only been one year since Jason Taylor was on the stage receiving his gold jacket.

Beathard had a stellar run on the business side of the NFL. He has four Super Bowl rings, three AFC championships, three NFC championships, and is listed as one of the top 80 Washington Redskins in team history.

Bobby Beathard spent 1978 to 1989 as the architect general manager of the Washington Redskins and the final years of his career were spent from 1990 to 2000 with the Chargers but what many fans don’t realize is that he broke into the executive realm under Don Shula.

In 1972 Beathard joined Shula’s staff as his new Director of Personnel, a position he would hold through1977 before leaving for the Redskins. Previously Beathard was a scout for the Chiefs and the Falcons.

His days in Miami were pretty darn good as he won two Super Bowls with the Dolphins and Don Shula but Miami’s general manager was pretty good himself. Don Shula. Of course Shula would later hand the title over to Eddie Jones.

It would have been an interesting twist to history had Shula given Beathard that titile and responsibility. Would the Dolphins have gone back to the Super Bowl before their 80’s run? Miami lost to Beathards’ Redskins in Super Bowl XVII.

History could have changed indeed. Interestingly enough when the 1983 draft arrived, Don Shula wanted to draft Hall of Fame corner Darrell Green. He was surprised that Dan Marino was still on the board so when the Dolphins were on the clock, Shula changed his mind and took Marino. Green however would go one slot later to the Redskins. Drafted by Bobby Beathard.

Congratulations Bobby Beathard on your Hall of Fame induction and it’s nice to know you got your start with the Dolphins!
