Jeremy Langford signed with the Dolphins Monday evening, and was out there on the field Tuesday morning for his first day of training camp.

Running back was not considered an area of weakness for the Miami Dolphins, and still isn’t even after the signing of Jeremy Langford Monday night. Langford will have a long rope to climb in order to make a roster spot by next month. Bringing in Langford gives Miami the opportunity to provide more rest during the remainder of camp and the preseason for guys like Kenyan Drake and Frank Gore.

For Langford, it gives him the opportunity to continue working out in hopes to land on a roster. He should see plenty of playing time throughout the preseason, which could get him recognized by another team, or possibly stay in Miami if he truly impresses or should an injury occur.

Langford and the Dolphins wasted no time getting him out on the field after signing a deal on Monday night. He was out there on the practice field with the rest of the team Tuesday morning. After practice, he talked to the media to discuss what he’s been doing this offseason, and why he chose Miami.

"“I had a couple of workouts. I had another workout before this. I’ve just been home. My main goal was staying in shape and when I get to a team, hit the ground running and don’t be too far behind…I’m familiar with (Head Coach Adam) Gase from Chicago, so I know the offense. I have a couple of teammates here and just knowing that playbook is really the biggest thing. I’ll come in not too far behind.”"

One of the teammates that Langford was referencing to is CB Tony Lippett. Both he and Lippett graduated from Michigan State together, and they were also roommates during that time. The familiarity with some of the personnel as well as the playbook are some of the reasons why Langford decided to take this opportunity with the Dolphins.

Langford understands that he’ll have his work cut out for him coming in this late, but he’s grateful for the opportunity to showcase what he can do, not only to the Dolphins, but the rest of the NFL as well.

"“It’s a challenge. I think you can control what you can control. The biggest thing for me is getting on special teams, show my speed and show my talent on tape. Just do it one day at a time and really just do it for all 31 other teams.”"

Bringing in Langford makes a lot of sense for both sides here. It gives Langford an opportunity in a system he’s already familiar with, and it allows Miami to give their veterans needed rest during this meaningless period. Drake has an injury history, and Frank Gore isn’t 22 anymore, even if he is still running like he is.

This may be the boost that Langford needs to continue his career. It looks like he and rookie Kalen Ballage will get the majority of carries throughout the preseason. As long as Langford doesn’t land on the Patriots to become a 1,000-yard rusher when this is all said and done then good luck to him with this opportunity.
