The Miami Dolphins have listened to a lot of criticism about their running back situation this off-season but it could be a strength.

Everyone seems to be concerned with the Miami Dolphin’s run defense and the improvements needed in that area of the game.

I for one, would like to see great strides in bettering their own ground game.  With a more experienced Kenyan Drake and an improved offensive line, I feel optimistic we’ll see a renovation.

Last season, according to statistics on NFL.com, the Miami Dolphins were ranked 29th in total rushing yards, dropping down 20 slots from the previous season. In 2016 the Dolphins were in the middle of the pack with 14 TD’s scored on the ground, compared to a measly 4 rushing touchdowns in 2017.  These glaring numbers show a definite need for a much improved rushing attack.

When the opposing team has no fear or respect for Miami’s rushing attack, they can key on the passing game. This obviously makes things much more difficult on Tannehill and the receivers. This quarterback and receiving squad have too much talent to be handcuffed by a defense that only needs to worry about one side of the offensive game. Also, a successful running game would allow the Dolphins to control the clock better and give the defense that ever so important rest.

I feel one of the significant keys to upgrade Miami’s rushing attack will be an improved offensive line. In the offseason the Dolphins added talented and experienced Josh Sitton and Daniel Kilgore. With these veterans working alongside Laremy Tunsil, Jesse Davis and the other younger linemen, who now have a few years under their belt themselves, there will hopefully be more control at the line of scrimmage and more holes opened up. It’s also a plus that they have been able to consistently practice and play together as a unit throughout training camp and preseason games.

"“Just having those guys out there – whoever it is honestly – we have a lot of confidence running behind them. As the preseason goes on and the offseason continues, they continue to build that camaraderie. You have more knowledge of the offensive scheme, so when they’re double-teaming up to the linebacker or gap blocking, whatever the case may be. You know what to expect, so you can be on the same page with whoever’s in there. I feel as the season continues to develop, we will continue to build that chemistry.” Kenyan Drake via miamidolphins.com"

The Dolphins running back Kenyan Drake got some valuable increased playing time the last five games last year.  In four of those five games he broke free for a run of 30+ yards. With that added experience he will be relying more on his instincts and skills, with the game slowing down for him.

"“Kenyan has grown up a lot. He’s matured and kind of became a pro. I think he’s had a couple of older guys to learn from. He’s doing a great job of being in the right spot on the field and working hard every single day. He’s a talented guy. He’s had that since he got here but I think he’s added all of the off-field stuff and just a complete understanding, and he’s really taken it to the next level.” Ryan Tannehill via miamidolphins.com"

All of this, and the incoming eternal force of Frank Gore, I can’t see anything but good things to come. If we can force the opposing defenses to revere our ground game, our passing attack with a healthy Tannehill, will be just that much better. The sky (and the ground) could be the limit for this offense in 2018.
