The giant, ice-cold, condensation glass of Kool-Aid is being served up from the Miami Dolphins organization about their shiny new toy at tight end, Mike Gesicki.

This 6’6” 247 Lb. pass catching tight end, who has been highly praised for his pass catching ability, but also heavily scrutinized for his blocking ability (or should I say lack there of).

All last week all I heard was the organization, teammates and coaches making sure that everyone was aware that Mike Gesicki has been staying after class to work on his blocking technique and ability. I for one was extremely glad to hear this, because I just finished watching the 2017 Fiesta Bowl to see why the tight end’s blocking was in question, and, ‘Oh, my, God’ (hands over face shaking my head).  I sincerely hope that Shane Day, Miami Dolphins tight end coach has some serious coaching ability to show this young man although it didn’t work to well for Julius Thomas, that’s for sure.

It would appear Mike Gesicki simply fears contact. Play after play he misses his assignment or never even tries to find a body to engage with. This must be one of the worst performances I’ve ever seen from a highly rated tight end prospect. I hope this prospect can figure this out or he won’t last long and will be added to the long list of rejected tight ends the dolphins have been going through. Now I know this was only one game, but it was a very big game, it was the bowl game and the last of his collegiate career game.

There is little doubt that Mike Gesicki possesses great athletic ability to go with his size 10 ¼” hands when the ball in the air, but unfortunately it appears he is afraid to put them on another uniform. Just watch the film of last year’s Fiesta Bowl and you will be scratching your head and perhaps questioning the decision of whom ever gave the thumbs up for that draft pick.

Time will tell, and I will definitely be rooting for the young man to improve his blocking ability, because the Dolphins sure could use a seam splitting, end line blocking tight end that could turn into the dolphin’s version of Rob Gronkowski. It would be nice, wouldn’t it?

"Teammate Kenny stills had his take on his new teammate. “I talked to Mike a lot about my time in New Orleans playing with a guy like Jimmy Graham, and just seeing when Jimmy had success, how it opened up the field for the rest of the guys,” Stills said. “Obviously, they’re two different type of players, two different guys, but Gesicki can go up and get the ball.”"

Now I’m not ready to start comparing Mike Gesicki to any tight end at this point, I mean he hasn’t even played an actual regular season NFL game yet, but after watching his film work, I have to put the glass of Kool-Aid back on the table and push it away until he can proof to me he is not afraid to engage with the opposing team players and make consistent blocks. Mike Gesicki better start staying after every class to hone those skills.

It does however seem from the team practices that Mike Gesicki and Ryan Tannehill have started to develop some good chemistry, now I just need to see that translate in a real game when it counts, especially in the red zone. I don’t remember ever seeing Ryan Tannehill ever utilizing his security blanket, the security blanket that every tight end should be for a quarterback, but time will tell, and I hope he turns into the tight end the Miami Dolphins need, so here’s to that glass of Kool-Aid and the red zone dominance that comes with it…Oh Yeah!
